Have you ever wanted to go on vacation or travel but still have all of the amenities of home life? Renting a home can give you the space, atmosphere and privacy that you are looking for. It is now easier than ever to rent a home with the amount of online sites designated towards homeowners renting out their homes or rental properties. If you are interested in renting a home, or even renting out your own read on to find out more about the process.

Starting Your Search

If you are looking to rent a home the first thing you should do is figure out what you require in the home. You may want to use the home exactly like you would at home, meaning that you would like to have a fully stocked kitchen that includes a fridge, freezer, microwave, coffee maker, oven, dishwasher and more. You may also want to make sure that the rental property has a washer and dryer so that you can clean your clothes while you are there. If you have small children you may require a crib and bathtub. Also consider how many stairs there are if you are traveling with people who have physical limitations. You may want to also ask about cable/ satellite, internet or any other technology needs you may need.

If you are looking to work from the rental home you may want access to high-speed internet, long-distance telephone and an office space to work from. If you are going away for vacation to somewhere hot you may want a pool, hot tub or dock area to enjoy. You may also want to make sure there is a barbeque or fire pit to use as well.

If you are planning on bringing a pet it is really important to make sure that the rental property is pet friendly and has adequate room for your furry family member. There may be an additional charge for having an animal on the premises for cleaning and possible wear and tear.

There are a few different ways to go about starting your search. You can enlist the services of an agent to help you find the right rental property or you can do it yourself by searching catalogs and online. Check out the photos of the property to make sure it is what you are looking for and that everything described looks like it should.

Home Rental Websites

There are many home and vacation rental websites to choose from. There are many ways to tailor your search by filtering what you are looking for and where. Some of the most popular and trusted home rental websites include:

  • Airbnb.com
  • Vrbo.com
  • Homeaway.com
  • Tripping.com
  • Ownerdirect.com

There are some sites that allow for home or vacation rentals but also offer different terms. Some home rental sites allow for you to swap homes with the owner, rent with other people, rent the home with the owners staying there and more. Make sure to carefully read what these terms mean for you and ensure you are being safe.

Read the Fine Print

Before giving away your credit card information or signing a contract for a house rental make sure that you read ALL of the fine print. Although you may think that there is a standard contract for all homes, many people who rent out their home or other properties will modify and add to existing contracts.

One of the main things you should consider before signing is any additional fees. Many renters are responsible for incidental fees such as cleaning, hydro and electricity. You may also be charged for any damages or the use of certain things in the home. Renter’s insurance is always a good idea to make sure you are protected in case any costly accidents occur while you are renting. Create a spreadsheet so that you can total all of the costs that are associated with renting the home so that you will not be shocked when you get a final bill. If you are renting in a different country take the exchange rate into account as well when it comes to your budget.

Important Things to Consider

Transportation

Some home rentals may even give you access to a vehicle, boat, bike or ATV while you are there. Ask if that is an option and costs associated. If you choose to rent a car or rely on public transit while you are renting ask the owner about the best places to rent from or routes.

Additional Fees

You may be surprised what you can be charged for while renting a house. Some homes will have toiletries, soaps and cleaners available for you to use (or at least to tie you over until you can go to the store). Other places may charge you for the items that you use including firewood, propane and more. Some rental homes will charge you for every time that you turn on the heated pool or hot tub too. Being aware of all additional fees that you may incur will help you be prepared when you receive your final bill.

Guest Limits

Many rental homes will say how many they sleep, but this does not necessarily mean that is the guest limit. Check with your rental agent about having people stay over as you may be charged extra or else your rental agreement will be voided based on a violation of terms.

House Rules

Most homes have rules, and just because you are renting doesn’t mean that the rules go out the window. Some home owners will want you to water the plants, dispose of trash a certain way, and ensure that the home is left the same way that it was found. Being aware of all of the house rules will help you to be on good terms with the owner.

Communication with the Owner

Depending on your personality you may want to have some communication with the owner, or not have any until checkout. Creating a positive relationship with the owner or the rental agent is good for many different reasons including keeping the lines of communication open.

Look at Reviews

One of the best ways to determine if the rental house you are staying at is worth the price it is asking and if it is a good fit for your needs is to read reviews. Many sites offer unbiased reviews from other renters of rental homes and vacation properties allowing you to make a somewhat educated decision before signing the rental agreement.

Renting a home can give you the real home away from home experience. If you do your homework you will be able to find a home that meets all of your needs and wants in the perfect location.
