Patios are an ideal place to entertain in summer. Though a patio may encompass backyard or deck space, it usually refers to a stone or paved outdoor area typically used for entertaining, barbecuing, dining, reading, or simply enjoying the weather. Patios may be covered or open to the sky. They are often connected to an indoor space by a screen or sliding door and tend to be found at the back of the house as opposed to the front. If you have an outdoor pool, your patio space might be located next to it.

If you’re working on developing an outdoor patio space or trying to spruce up the one you already have, check out the following items that

Paving

A patio usually has a floor surface. While cement or concrete will do the job, other options include brick, tile, stone, and wood. Interlocking brick is a low-cost option that’s simple to put together if you’re interested in saving money. Ceramic tile offers a more solid surface that’s easy to keep clean. It’s also a durable option for the outdoors. Stone, such as flagstone offers a more natural look. It fits with outdoor décor and you can install a stone patio yourself. Stone tends to be more costly than other materials. Finally, a wood deck, whether raised or low to the ground, is a common choice for backyards. Not only does it blend in with the natural aesthetic but it wears well over the years.

A Source of Shade

It’s a good idea to think about having a source of shade on your patio. You may have natural sources of shade, such as trees. In addition, your house or cottage may also provide shade during the day. If you find that you either don’t have enough shade or experience long periods of sun, you might want to consider a large umbrella, a gazebo, or an awning.

Patio Furniture

Patio furniture can be the difference between a functional patio and a non-functional one. When looking for patio furniture, consider size and style. You will need a table and chairs if you want to entertain. For lounging, Muskoka chairs, zero-gravity chairs, and chaise lounges are ideal. Having multiple options is a good idea, especially if you plan on having friends and family over to share the space with you.

A Barbecue

A grill or barbecue is useful for summer and outdoor entertaining. Instead of having to prepare the food inside, you can stay outside with your guests while you prepare the food. The smell of a barbecue definitely adds something to any backyard get together. Without a barbecue, your patio will be less functional.

A Fire Pit

A fire pit is another option for bringing people together—especially on cooler nights. If your patio is large, your fire pit can have ample seating. It might even be a dedicated space on its own.

Garden/Flowers

Don’t forget landscaping. One of the most common mistakes that people make when it comes to preparing their patio space is forgetting about greenery. Make the most of the fact that your patio is outdoors—flowers and foliage go a long way as décor.
