A sore throat can be the worst. That itchy scratching feeling making it difficult or painful to swallow. Even talking may become too painful or worse you lose your voice entirely. A sore throat can be one of the first signs of a cold or flu but it can also be caused by dry weather or allergies. A sore throat will usually clear up on its own, but sometimes a sore throat can become more serious. If you develop a fever or your sore throat persists longer than 2 weeks you should see your doctor. But before you run off to your local pharmacy to buy over the counter pain relievers, here are some easy sore throat remedies you can try at home. With simple ingredients you already have at home like honey and ginger, these home remedies are quick and easy. They will have you feeling better in no time.
1 - Lemon, Honey and Ginger with Hot Water
Lemon has been shown to have some antimicrobial effects as well has reducing swelling. Honey has been used for colds for centuries and studies have shown that honey has been shown to have antimicrobial and antiviral properties. While it can’t cure a sore throat, it definitely makes the remedies taste better. Remember honey is not for babies and be cautious if you are diabetic. Ginger is good for colds and flues but getting toxins out of the body and helping with dizziness and nausea. Together this soothing combination in hot warm will make your whole body feel better
2 - Warm Tea
Tea has long been used before bed to relax and calm but it also sooths irritations with its anti-inflammation properties. Grab your favorite tea, steep a bag in hot water for 3-5 minutes. You can add a teaspoon of honey for an added sweetness and throat soothing.
3 - Salt Water
You may remember doing this after getting your wisdom teeth out to keep your mouth clean of infection. This remedy has been used for years to keep mouths clean and infection free. Take a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, stir until dissolved. Gargle water in mouth and throat for 1 minute and repeat 3 to 4 times per day. Remember not to swallow thorough as this remedy isn’t tasty.
4 - Apple Cider Vinegar and Warm Water
This one may sound unpleasant but has been used by the Ancient Greeks to combat cold symptoms. Combine one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with one cup warm water. Vinegar is 0.5 percent acid which can remove bacteria and can sooth sore throats with a cooling effect. The vinegar will also pull water from the mucus membranes breaking up the mucus. Add some honey to make this tonic a little bit easier to swallow.
5 - Chewing on Cloves of Garlic
Take one clove of garlic and suck on it like a candy between your cheek and teeth. If you can chew on it, that is even better. But if chewing on a whole clove of garlic doesn’t sound appealing to you, try adding a clove of garlic to a cup of boiling water. Garlic has been shown to have antimicrobial properties which can help flush out a cold. Add a teaspoon of honey for even more soothing benefit and drink up.
6 - Hot Toddy
Lastly and probably the most enjoyable for adults is a Hot Toddy. A hot toddy is probably best enjoyed right before bed. Add one ounce of your favorite whisky with one tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of lemon juice in one cup of hot water. While the warmth sooths your sore throat, the alcohol will also warm your throat and chest. Add a clove for additional pain relieve and drink it down before bed to have a restful and relaxing sleep.
